6 hours and counting

In a little over 6 school hours, I will be on spring break! I can't wait! I am ready for a nice break away from school. I love my kids, but I need to recharge my batteries to makemit through the end of the year. I have a billion things to do between now and the end of the year. A lot of fun coming up!

I have changed the way I am doing my animal unit. We cover the animal family for one week, then we spend the next week writing about it and doing art. I have decided to do a painted paper project for each animal. We did the birds a couple weeks ago. Last week we did giraffes, which weren't as cute as I thought, but still cute! This week, we did our frogs. Too cute! I will hopefully have pics tomorrow!

I've got a giant mess in my room that needs a lot of attention. I've never fully recovered from moving into my room last summer. I think tomorrow, if we get everything done, my kids will get to watch a movie, something they rarely get to do! then I can get ready for the weeks after break! My kids have worked hard and deserve a little brain break!

Happy Thursday! Here's to a great day before spring break!

Monday, Monday....

Today was a Monday, but it wasn't all that horrible!  I figured the kids would be nutty since we had rain/hail/graupel over the weekend.  And it was a bit chilly today for our normal So Cal weather!  I am officially on countdown to spring break (4 more days!) and to the end of the year (44 more days...I can do this!).

I had an IEP today for one of my little guys.  He qualified for Special Ed, which isn't a big surprise to me.  I am just upset that it took this long, seeing as how he was retained in Kindergarten.  He will be going to RSP this year, with possible placement in SDC for next year.  And he will get speech for real, which is way better than what he has now.  I just feel bad that he has sat in my room all year and hasn't gotten a lot out of it.  But, at least he will get some help!

My kids decided to be a little freaky for the sub!  One kid decided to argue with her about something and then burst into tears, screaming while he sobbed.  Seriously?  I happen to have an SST for this kid tomorrow, and I am not going to hold anything back.  It isn't like I haven't talked to the parent this year.  I have a feeling she is going to want to blame me for her son's behavior, while I blame genetics and parenting.  Not looking forward to this meeting tomorrow.

But tomorrow is the first official day of spring!  I love spring.  I can't wait for warm weather, flip flops and capris.  Some of you are enjoying warm weather like that - we are still chilly thanks to Mother Nature and her late winter storm.  But the rain is good for my trees and I am hoping for a lot of yummy summer fruits!

I didn't get anything accomplished last night and I doubt I will get anything done tonight.  I am so ready for a vacation, even if it is just 5 days of no work.  But 5 days away from some of the ones I work with is just what the doctor has ordered for my sanity (the dr. being myself!!!!).  Happy Monday!  Here's to a great rest of the week!

I got nothin'

I don't have a thing ready for this week!  And I'm tired and ready for bed and it's only 6pm!  I spent the day with hubby and my daughter shopping and setting up his office.  I had hoped to be home by 4, but when I looked at the clock, it was 5:15!  Oops!  Now it's crunch time - get dinner cooked (it was made, just needs to be heated!), laundry done, daughter in the bath, lesson plans sketched and hit the hay!  I have 5 more days to go before a glorious week off!

This week is going to drag.  The fire marshall is coming tomorrow, which means I had to take my stuff off the walls that isn't regulation, and then put it away so it doesn't look like I had it up.  All my anchor charts had to come down, as well as some decorations.  I'm sure I have stuff up that isn't right, but oh well.  She can tell me what I need to fix and I will fix it.  I hope we pass so we don't have to go through this again at Open House time!  Then, I have an IEP tomorrow afternoon, which means I need to do lesson plans, not that they will necessarily be followed.  I wanted to make a fun math paper for the kids, but I don't know if I will get to that.  On Tuesday, I have an SST for a student that I had e-mailed the mom about on Friday.  She didn't bother to e-mail me, but called the principal.  WTH?  My principal is on my side, but I did ask the mom to meet me on Wednesday after school.  So, I wonder what this fun SST will be about!?!?!?  Hubby will be gone on Wednesday thru Friday for a conference in Vegas.  Life is rough sometimes!  I wish I was on spring break this week to go with him!  Then on Friday, glorious Friday, my daughter has basketball practice during what would normally be my pajama-pizza-movie night.  Then Saturday will be a basketball game!  Yikes!  I have a busy week!

It didn't snow at my house, but there is snow on all the hills around us.  I was really hoping for a snow day tomorrow!  It's freezing cold though (we are wimps...we like it warm!) and I want to curl up and read in bed.  Maybe that will win out over lesson plans!

Well, time for dinner!  If I get anything cutesy made, I will share.  If not, then I will have to think fast tomorrow!  Happy Sunday!

I am so glad it's the weekend!  I am tired, cranky and done!  One more week til Spring Break!  I can't wait, even though my break will consist of taking my daughter to school, helping hubby at his office and trying to spring clean my house!  I may start tomorrow, but it will be winter cleaning!  Here is the forecast for Sunday:
Snow, or rain mixed with snow, likely. Quite cold. Windy with a chance of thunderstorms. Cold. West wind 10 to 15 mph gusting to 30 mph, high around 38°F.
I live in Southern California!  This is not normal!  My daughter is hopeful it snows so she can play in the snow.  I don't mind if it does, but I want to be home, not running errands!  Tomorrow is supposed to be windy and rainy and cold and then Sunday SNOW?  Wow!

But for now, I think it's time for a good night's sleep!  I have been so good and have been up every day at 5:15 to work out.  I feel better about working out in the morning and it waked me up, but dang it if I am still not losing weight.  I am getting very frustrated with WW and am not a happy camper at all.  Any ideas or suggestions?  I feel like I am the only one there not losing weight and doing what I am supposed to do!  Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Happy Friday all!

Counting down...

I don't know about you, but I am counting down!  First I am counting down to Spring Break.  I have 2 more weeks of school, then a week off.  I am ready for the week already, but there are 10 more days in the way!  And, it won't really be a big break - I still have to get up to take my daughter to school.  She has break the week after me!  Just my luck!  I haven't had time off yet where I could sleep in and enjoy.  Maybe that is summer...the next thing I am counting down til.  There are 11 weeks TOTAL til summer vacation!  I will be doing the happy dance on May 25!

But, until vacation, I have work.  I don't mind going, but I am worn out lately.  Plain tired.  And it didn't help that last night was the time change and I went to bed later than I wanted to and didn't sleep well.  I would love to take a nap, but then there would be no sleep tonight.  So I will just mope around today, get things ready for the week and maybe, just maybe clean the kitchen really well.  It needs it...good thing no one comes over to visit and eat!

This week, we are working on plurals (again).  I made up a little game to help my kids try and see the difference between singular and plural nouns.  Some are regular and some are irregular.  You can download it here for free.  All I ask is for a little thanks!

This last week, we were reviewing what we learned about birds.  I never realized it before, I but I really like teaching about birds.  It's something the kids like and can relate to and they all know what a bird is.  We wrote about them on Monday and Tuesday, did our neat copies on Wednesday and then worked on my new favorite project on Thursday.  I found it at Painted Paper, my new favorite art blog.  I had my kids paint the paper on Wednesday and then we cut and glued on Thursday.  We also made little birdhouses to go with them.  TOO CUTE!

They are hanging in the office to help welcome spring.  I think they are just the cutest things ever.  Now I have to find something cute to make for mammals.  Hmmmm....any ideas?  I already have reptiles, fish, amphibians and insects covered, but not mammals.

In our RTI group, we were discussing Olivia this last week.  We read OIivia, discussed why it is a "fantasy" story and not real and then we looked at the art that was in there by Pollack.  On Wednesday,we got our crazy on and painted our own Pollack-inspired pieces.  The kids had a blast.  I wanted to use tempra paint outside, but we had some crazy wind and it was ice cold, so we were stuck inside with watercolors.  Still cute though!  On Friday, the kids even named their works!

These are now hanging in the library for all to see!  Some of the kids who are not my own were not too excited to have it hung up.  My kids love it...we've put up several things over the year and they love seeing when we go!

We also did a pig to go with the story, If You Give a Pig a Pancake, but these other projects are cuter!

Well, time for me to get my butt in gear.  I have to help my daughter with her project for school.  Luckily it's just gluing things on to a rainbow.  I said NO!! to the Leprechaun Trap.  In fact, I gave my students the same project as my daughter - decorate a rainbow with things - don't just color it!  Happy Sunday!  I hope everyone has a great week.  We are supposed to be cold and cloudy all week...not the weather to help bring on Spring Fever, but whatever!  Enjoy!

So tired!

Oh my word! I am exhausted today. What a busy, busy day! But we had a fun day, so it's all worth it. I will have pics tomorrow for you, mostly because I am too lazy to get off the couch and turn on my computer, download pics and all that stuff!

Today we made our pigs to go with If You Give a Pig a Pancake. They are all the same more or less, but some still look a bit different than others! Theynhad to chooses something to give the pig (not from the story) and then write about what the pig would want to go with it. Imwas going to do something with the cat and cupcake story, but I changed my mind. I am project-out today. And, by the time we take our spelling test and story test tomorrow, the morning will be about gone. If we have time, we will work on our giraffes for a directed drawing. If you haven't read the story Giraffes Can't Dance, run and check it out! Love it!

We also made our birds today. SO CUTE!!!!! My new favorite project. Yesterday, we sponge painted a 12x18 sheet of white paper. I gave them 8 colors and told them to cover it all. Of course, most of them didn't, but it was still pretty cute. Today, we made the parts for the bird, drawing them out on the back, unpainted side. We then out the parts together and added a wiggly eye. Then, since I wasn't crazy yet, we made a little birdhouse. I cut. Piece of paper, made a pattern, then traced the roofline for them kids to cut. They used their painted paper to make the rook and the bottom of the birdhouse. Then we glued thembird onto the birdhouse. I gave them to the office to put up on the wall for spring. If I remember, I will take pics tomorrow, once they are up. I forgot before they went up there. Oops!

I am very glad tomorrow is Friday. Tired this week and a bit frustrated. But, it's nothing that isn't new, just wishing people would SHUT UP and learn that they aren't the center of attention. But, it's been like this for 4 years, so why would it change? I guess it's just that time of year where I am tired of the crap that's been going on all year and am ready for a break. But, we have 2 more weeks til spring break and then 8 weeks after that. Just 10 more weeks til I get to spend the summer with my baby (who will be 6!). But for now, hubby and baby are on a daddy-daughter date and I am home in the peace and quiet...I should do this more often! Happy almost Friday!

Wednesday already!

This week has been a good week, but I am beat!  Between wacky weather (80 on Monday, 57 yesterday with horrible wind and even worse wind today!) and the kids being a little off, it's been a long week already.  I think I will wear them out tomorrow, though, with all the projects we have going on.

I found the cutest project on Pinterest the other night - birds and bird houses.  We were talking about birds last week in science and are writing about them this week.  So today, I decided to start the little project I was thinking about.  Of course, no camera, but I will take it tomorrow for sure!  We will be making little birds and birdhouses or nests to go with them.  I haven't decided which one.  But, if you have the time to spend looking at fantastic art, check out http://paintedpaperintheartroom.blogspot.com/.  I saw so many cute things there.  I am jealous that many of you have art and other specials.  My kids have only me...lucky them!

We are also going to be making the cutest pig that I found on a blog somewhere.  I feel horrible since I don't know where I got it from.  When I find out, I will pass it on.  We're reading If You Give a Pig a Pancake.  My kids think it's hilarious.  I've been reading the other books in the series and they just laugh and try to guess what's next.  Tomorrow we will read about the dog and donuts and then cat and cupcakes on Friday.  Fun times!

One of the other first grade classes is going on a field trip.  She was lucky and somehow was snuck in to the bus to be able to go with the 4th and 5th graders.  The whole first grade wanted to go, but only she's going - they are going to watch a play that her son is in.  I guess we weren't special enough to go.  Oh well, I will do art instead!  My kids are bummed we don't get a field trip, but there is no money and no parents have ever worked in my room this year, and I don't like having parents who only want to go on the trips, but not be bothered to work at all the rest of the year.  Is that mean of me?  I wish they would work with their kids every day, just not one day.

Well, it's time for me to go eat dinner!  Yummy Split Pea Soup on this chilly night.  It was my idea, but hubby had to make it (throw it in the crock pot and turn it on!).  And I am so thankful it's ready to go!  Happy Wednesday!

What a Monday!

Today was a Monday, that's for sure!  I am glad it's over.  And there are only 10 more Mondays to go!  Saying it like that makes it seems managable, and scary!  Crazy!!!!

My kids were off today.  They didn't seem to be awake.  They didn't seem to be able to think.  They were out of it.  And they never got in it, either.  They were OK behavior wise, but I felt like I was pulling teeth trying to get them to do what I asked them to do.  I think they woke up at 2:30, 45 minutes before they went home!

One of my ADHD kids was way off today, even for him.  He's been sick, but he didn't even look good today.  He spent a good part of his morning tearing Kleenex into little pieces because he didn't have a pencil.  I moved his desk and made him go elsewhere.  Then he decided to cry, burst into tears and then finally did half of the work.  54 more days...I can do this!

It's supposed to be cold tomorrow - today was 80 something, the weekend was almost 90 and tomorrow will be 58 they say. And windy.  Not a good day is my prediction!

With my intervention group, we started an author study/unit on Olivia.  I have nothing for it, so I will be making it up as I go.  I'm not sure what I am going to do or how I will do it, but I will do something!  If I get it put together, I will post it if it is good enough.  If you have seen anything out there in bloggyland on Olivia, please let me know!

I am off to clean house!  I worked out at 5:15 this morning, so I can enjoy my evenings.  Housework isn't it, but I need to do it!  Happy Monday!

Where has the year gone and a FREEBIE!

Man, oh man!  I can't believe the year has gone by so quickly.  We have 11 weeks of teaching left before it's summer vacation!  Where did the time go?  This is normally the time of year I begin to panic.  I don't feel that my kids are ready to go to second grade and goodness knows the second grade teachers don't think the kids are ready, either.  But, overall, I have a really good group of kids who are pretty solid in their academics.  I have about 7 that I am worried about, and 2 of them are either going to be tested or retained.  So, the leaves 5.  4 of them are English Learners and one is majorly ADHD with a mother who is equally ADHD.  Of my EL's, one will be tested next year (he's been retained and making progress, but he still has a long way to go), one is immature with a mom who makes excuses for him and the others are working as hard as they can.  Actually, the really immature one holds his own with reading... it's the actual work that gets him and he is too busy playing around at his desk.

Anyway, I am thinking of all the things I still need to do, but there is no time to do it.  I would love to throw the curriculum out the window and have a little (OK, a lot!) fun while still learning all that we need to do.  But, it's also the time of year where the principal is freaked out about test scores and everyone must be doing what they are supposed to be doing.  Makes me mad...

This week, we are reading If You Give a Pig a Pancake in our reading program.  You can get my mini unit for it here.  I made it up last year and it's been quite popular.  We will also spend the week listening to the others stories and writing them as the week goes on.  In my perfect mind, we would write a page a day per story, make cute pictures and put them together in a little book.  In reality, we will see.  Maybe next week I will have something to show for it.  I plan on Friday making a cute little cupcake picture to go with the story about cat and the cupcake.  Again,we'll see how it goes.

Last week in our program, we were practicing compound words.  My kids are pretty good with knowing what words are compound words and which aren't.  I made this fun little center activity to use this week as a review and something fun to introduce St. Patrick's Day.  I will be laminating it later tonight and then cutting it apart for the pocket chart tomorrow.  My kids love things like this and think it's a game rather than learning!  If you download this, please leave me a comment!

I am very sad to be sitting here in front of my computer today working.  It's in the 80's today and sunny.  By Tuesday, it will be 25 degrees colder and rainy.  We had snow on Monday night and then it was windy the rest of the week.  But thw weekend...glorious! I love pre-spring!

Have a great week!  Like always, if I have time, I will post this week, but if not, I will see you again next weekend!
